Rotary Club Sponsored Events

Rotary Club of Catonsville Sponsors Multiple Community Programs & Events
A number of events during this upcoming weekend of May 12-13, 2012 highlight the activities of the Rotary Club of Catonsville as a sponsor and promoter of some Catonsville community events and programs.

Bloomsbury Ave. Wall Mural

Work has just begun, after more than two years of planning, on a 1200 square foot community Bloomsbury Ave. wall mural. The mural will depict a number of scenes from Frederick Road over the last 100+ years of Catonsville history. It will be painted behind the newly renovated House of Time at 701 Frederick Road, on the exterior wall of the M&T Bank Building at 705 Frederick Road. With formal sponsorship by the Rotary Club of Catonsville, community activist Meg Tipper served as Project Coordinator, and solicited significant contributions from a number of Catonsville businesses and organizations to make the project possible. Local artist Ed Williams is the artistic director, and high school student volunteers from Catonsville High School’s National Art Honor Society will help with the painting. The mural is expected to be complete prior to Catonsville’s annual Fourth of July parade, which is one of the scenes depicted on the mural.

Catonsville First Annual Kite Contest

Charlestown Retirement Community will be the location of Catonsville’s First Annual Kite Contest on Saturday, May 19th, from 10 am to noon. Prizes will be awarded for several categories, with students from local elementary schools, the community and even some Charlestown residents competing for highest flying, longest flying, most creative, and most unusual kites. The contest was a creation of Pat Kasuda, the President of the Charlestown Rotary Fellowship, who immediately enlisted both Charlestown Management and the Catonsville Rotary Club as co-sponsors. Both organizations have already committed to making the contest an annual springtime event.

Catonsville Arts Expo

The 3rd Annual Catonsville Arts Expo will be held on Saturday and Sunday, May 19 - 20, 2012 at the Bloomsbury Community Center, 106 Bloomsbury Ave.from 10 am - 5 pm each day.
Under the leader ship of the Catonsville Arts Guild, the Expo will include most forms of art including small sculptures, paintings, film shorts, musicians, theater, writers, stained glass, and jewelers. Event organizer Jane Byers first approached The Rotary Club of Catonsville and asked them to sponsor the event in 2011, and this year that sponsorship has continued, with Lorraine Imwold assuming the role of organizer.

Women’s Expo - Scholarship & Financial Aid Awards Announced

The Women’s Expo, held on March 10-11, 2012, has just released its annual report. In addition to featuring more than 100 exhibitors from women-based businesses, motivational speakers, crafts and jewelry, holistic health and fitness, and business finance workshops, the Expo turned a profit of approximately $7,500, all of which was donated to various CCBC funds for financial aid, scholarships, and the Mansion restoration project. The CCBC - Catonsville chapter of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges started this event eleven years ago as a fundraiser for student scholarships. Last year, the CCBC Enterprise Institute, under the direction of Prof. L. C. Aaronson, took over the active management of this program, and he asked the Rotary Club of Catonsville to serve as the formal Expo sponsor for 2012. The Enterprise Institute and Rotary Club intend to continue working together in the future, and build on the success of the past 12 years.

Catonsville Teacher Awards

Finally, a longstanding Catonsville tradition founded by the predecessor to the current Catonsville Rotary Club has been revived and relaunched by Catonsville Chamber of Commerce as the Catonsville Outstanding Teacher Awards . Each year for more than 30 years, the Catonsville Rotary Club honored one teacher and one senior student from Catonsville High School at an Awards Banquet as the Teacher and Student of the Year. The teacher received an award certificate, as well as a voucher for dinner at the Candlelight Inn, the club's regular meeting place. The Student of the Year received a $1,000.00 scholarship to assist them with their college education. This annual event continued uninterrupted until the club disbanded due to lack of members in 2010. The former Catonsville Sunrise Rotary Club assumed the name "Rotary Club of Catonsville" in 2011, but did not continue the awards banquet and program. After a one-year hiatus, the program has now been revived and expanded with a process for nominating teachers from all local elementary, middle and high schools. Numerous Catonsville businesses and organizations have stepped forward to sponsor the program. The awards event will be held at the Community College of Baltimore County Catonsville Campus (CCBC), on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 5:30 p.m.
