New Mattress Store to Open In Catonsville!

Well, we finally got our much needed Mattress store on Frederick Rd!

The Store Front that used to house the Catonsville Tuxedo Company, next door to Morsberger's Tavern, has been leased to a Mattress Dealer.

This is the same storefront where a local businessman tried to open a Wine Tasting and Tapas Bar, not too long ago. Not a Package Goods Store, but Upscale Dining.

A liquor License was secured and everything was progressing, when the 300 ft rule was imposed. It seems that the building was just a few feet to short of being legal. I would like to personally thank the Restaurant owner that raised the issue. I am sure that his main concern was to protect the citizens of Catonsville from the horror of a decent place to eat and not purely to protect his own business.

This was another lost opportunity for Catonsville.

I truly do not believe that the Citizens of our Community realize how much power they have to make a difference. It is much easier to get in our cars and drive to another Community for dinner, than it is to Contact our State Politicians and let their voices be heard.

For the record, I don't have, nor have I ever had any financial interest in the above property or the business that didn't open there. But, I do believe that if Main Street Catonsville doesn't Thrive, it is not going to Survive!

The Old Fire House on Bloomsbury Ave. was recently bought by Mosaic services. That is the group formerly known as ReVisions. That building would have been an excellant rest.
It looks like the vacant buildings in town are filling up.

You are right, that Old Fire House could have been a great Restaurant. Although, it is too close to the school, so it isn't likely that it would have been able to happen.

The Old Paradise in a Tea Cup is going to reopen soon as a Bakery Cafe! It is a little off of the Beaten Path, but, it Looks real nice and I am sure will they will do very well! Craig W.

Who was the owner that blocked the Tapas restaurant? I'd like to know so I can stop patronizing his business.

I would like to know the reason Ship's cafe does not like Nacho Mama's since it is a different cuisine. Are there some people that don't want to see new restaurants because they are affraid of traffic? I patronize Ship's and enjoy it but what is going on here? If we continue to have people push away upscale businesses we are going to end up with Arby's, KFC, The Dollar Store and a Sally's nails. People will then stop going to eat at the existing restaurants because who wants to walk around that mess.

AJ - I think that you are right about some people being affraid of more traffic, but, I think it is a very small group. I have tried to use this website to find out what people want. Many great ideas have been shared here. Some of them just won't work, do to physical limitations (Trader Joes, Wegmans) Others won't work because there are some people in this town with very small minds. The owner of Ship's wants no competition and view's any rest. as competition. Craig W.

The owner of Ship's wants no competition because the people of Catonsville will stop going there. It is a very overrated restaurant that charges way too much for everything on their menu, including their highly overrated crabs.

Being a restaurant manager, I expect great service, food, and value. However, Ship's does not offer any of that. It is a shame that the people of Catonsville are forced to eat there because they have nowhere else to go.

I also would like to know who was the business owner who blocked the tapas restaurant. I, too, would like to stop patronizing that person's business and encourage all our neighbors to do the same.

CRAIG,
IS NICE TO SEE NEW BUSINESS COMING TO THE CATONSVILLE AREA,AND I WISH THE MAN GOOD LUCK.MY ONLY COMPLAINT WITH HIS BUSINESS IS SEEING THE MATRESS ON THE FRONT SIDEWALK,IT IS LIKE DRIVING THROUGH THE HOOD IN BALTIMORE. MAYBE HE CAN KEEP HIS PRODUCTIN THE STORE AND NOT ON THE SIDEWALK.LET'S KEEP CATONSVILLE LOOKING GOOD.
HAVE A GREAT DAY.

I am sure if you ask around you will easily find out who it was that raised the issue to block the Tapas place.
I understand your feelings about boycotting his business. But, we really do need to support the Restaurants that we already have in Town. I do not want to see anyone have to close down their business just because they are a jerk. If you want to help things, please contact Councilman Sam Moxley and State Delegate James Malone in writing and demand that they introduce and pass legislation that will allow liquor licenses to be obtained by business owners that are within 300 ft. of a church or school if they are in the Catonsville Revitalization District. This is what we need to turn the old Hardware store into a good restaurant. Craig W.

I understand not wanting to undermine local businesses in spite of their questionable and potentially detrimental community business practices. Perhaps another course of action in addition to contacting politicians is to write a nice( and I really do mean nice)letter to the proprieter letting him know your opinion as a local consumer.

I live in Catonsville and would obviously love to support local!
I would also desperately love for there to be an upscale dining place in Catonsville. My husband and I came back from a recent trip to Europe and thought about how fantastic it would be if there was a walking destination in the middle of town for us (we do have the coffee shop which is nice!). Plus I know there are many many people who want to keep their money in town but sadly don’t have a place to spend it.

Best wishes with the blog!

Craig,
What about a fresh seafood, BYOB market in the old hardware store. That way it does not interfer with the zoning laws. Then maybe excisting restaurant owners will not feel threaten by competition.

I think a Market would be great. Are there seafood Markets that are BYOB? If you would like to open one please contact me.
